Alabama premieres #BraveMissWorld

When Miss Israel 1998 Linor Abargil was crowned Miss World 1998, the world was unaware the beaming beauty was hiding the trauma of a recent rape under her radiant smile.
Soon after her Miss World win, the media dug up the story of Abargil's sexual assault and it was splashed across headlines all over the world.
Ten years after the assault and subsequent outing, Abargil emerged as a powerful lawyer and rape awareness activist.
She relates her story firsthand in the Emmy-nominated 2013 documentary "Brave Miss World,"  which will be screened on Tuesday, March 17 at 7 p.m. at Universitry of South Alabama's student center ballroom as part of USA's Sexual Assault Awareness Week.
"I have been documenting my journey and in the film I tell my own story, without shame, as I reach out to other women around the world, encouraging them to tell theirs," Abargil wrote on bravemissworld.com.
The screening, co-sponsored by the Mobile Jewish Fillm Festival, is free and open to the public. Folks interested in attending are encouraged to make reservations by calling the Mobile Jewish Federation Office at 343-7197.
Abargil won't be at the screening to directly address the audience, but director and producer Cecelia Peck will be on hand to host a discussion after the screening. Peck is the daughter of legendary actor Gregory Peck.

"Brave Miss World has been lauded by critics. "Esquire" called it "The essential documentary of 2013," and the Los Angeles Times said it is "impassioned and inspiring."
USA's Sexual Assault Awareness week also includes a self-defense workshop and a production of "The Vagina Monologues." For a full schedule of Sexual Assault Awareness Week events. visit http://www.southalabama.edu/departments/commonread/event.html.
