In Birmingham this afternoon, Gov. Robert Bentley denied that he has misused state property.
In his first public appearance since his wife filed for divorce last Friday, he sidestepped questions about his wife's decision to seek the divorce after 50 years of marriage.
"This is a difficult time," Bentley said to reporters after the speech to a business group of about 300 at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. "It is a private matter we are going through. I would like people to know we love them and we're going to continue to be their governor. I'm going to continue to try and be the best governor Alabama has ever had."
After the speech, Bentley was first asked his reaction to Rep. Allen Farley's request Tuesday that Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange begin an investigation into Bentley's use of state property, primarily state aircraft.
"I don't have any reaction to that. It's not true and we'll show that it's not," Bentley said.
Then asked about his reaction to Dianne Bentley filing for divorce, Bentley said, "I really do not have a comment. It's a private matter."
Bentley went on to thank the people of Alabama for praying for him and his family.
