Kenyan 400m duo Koki Manunga and Joyce Zakary have become the first athletes at the World Championships to test positive for doping.
The pair accepted provisional suspensions following positive samples provided at their hotel in Beijing prior to the start of their competitions.
IAAF Rules dictate that the IAAF is only able to make a public disclosure once this provisional suspension is in place.
Zakary set a national record of 50.71secs in her heat on Monday but did not show up for her semi-final on Tuesday. Manunga did not compete in the event.
A fortnight ago the Confederation of African Athletes hit out at the recent wave of doping allegations, claiming “immense damage” had been caused to their athletes.
“The Confederation of African Athletes is disturbed that allegations have been aimed against athletes from African countries, like Kenya, when the overwhelming majority of athletes have never tested positive for any banned substance,” said the organisation in a statement on August 10.
