Potential jurors were shocked when the 69-year-old turned up at a Dallas courthouse on Wednesday morning.
However despite his clear enthusiasm judging from the pictures posted on Twitter he did not make it through the selection process.
Lawyers only called 23 of the 35 member-panel before they filled the jury bench for the case.
Juror Sheri Coleman told The Dallas Morning News: "They made it seem like it was an anonymous juror that never showed up and then they brought him in.
"He was very personable, very friendly, just 'hey I'm here to serve', he asked questions and was very nice," she said. "I loved it."
Mr Bush has been called up for jury service before – but he declined, saying he was too busy.
The year was 2005 – and he was serving as the 43rd president of the USA.
His communications director Freddy Ford said: "President Bush received his jury summons and reported for service at the George Allen Courts Building in Dallas.
"He sat through the jury selection panel for a case in Judge Eric Moye's court on the 14th civil district but – surprise! – was not picked to serve as a juror."
