A professional sex toy tester has told how she has “the world’s best job” – candidly admitting: “There’s always some kind of orgasm going on.”
Karleen Howden has the enviable task of trialling new sex toys. testing out at least two new ones every week.
The 30-year-old, has even sent her mother Elaine Howden, 53, sex toys to test.
She said her sexy job did not prevent her from having sex with her boyfriend, Desi Marjolin, 39, everyday, and said he is very supportive of her career, stepping in to help her test some of the toys out.
She said: “He’s absolutely fine with it, he doesn’t mind what I bring home.
“It’s good for him to get involved so we can test what the toys are like when used solo and in a couple.
"Things are great with Desi. We’re both very open-minded and I’ve never been happier.”
Karleen, of Bexley, Kent, says her job has encouraged her family and friends to talk more candidly about their own sex lives.
She said: "Hearing how openly I talk about sex has made my friends more comfortable speaking about their own experience.
“I’ve got a really mixed bag of friends who are into all sorts.
“I’ve been brought up to be open about sex. It was never a taboo in our household. I’ve got five sisters and I’ve sent all of them toys to try out.
“I’ve also sent my mum kegel balls, which are designed to tighten the pelvic floor muscles. We tell each other absolutely everything so it wasn’t awkward at all.”
According to the latest National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, the average Brit aged 16 to 44 has sex just under five times a month.
After testing both new products and updates on old ones, Karleen reports her findings to the Ann Summers buying and design teams.
She also posts online reviews and helps recruit other testers.
She said: “I posted a message on Facebook a few weeks ago asking for volunteers to test a new range of toys and was inundated with responses.
“Sometimes, I’m surprised by what people like. I know people who on the surface are quite quiet but behind closed doors are into dominatrix-style toys.
“Not that I’d ever judge anyone.”
But life as a sex toy tester is not all fun and games.
Karleen said: “Some of the instructions on the toys are quite specific, so you have to take it seriously.
“Plus, Ann Summers want the reviewers to be honest, so there’s no point in only giving good feedback if it’s not genuine.”
Though she knows some fellow reviewers that would prefer not to test certain toys, she says she is “open to anything”.
Her favourite toys so far are those in Ann Summers new Moregasm range.
She said: “I love the technology. I appreciate some people prefer to keep it private.
“But I don’t think there should be a taboo talking about your sex life. At the end of the day, everyone does it.”
