Women are turning a worrying bodyshaming trend into something much more positive with the #BoobsOverBellyButtons challenge.
Last week, a disturbing new craze emerged on Chinese social media site Weibo, where girls were posting selfies of themselves trying to touch their belly buttons by swinging their arm round their back.
Known as ‘the belly button challenge‘, it was slammed for promoting damaging attitudes towards weight and size. Thankfully, it’s now been replaced by something far more positive.
The #BoobsOverBellyButtons campaign was started by British lingerie company Curvy Kate, in partnership with breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!
As well as encouraging women to feel positive about their bodies, the challenge has a very real purpose – showing women how to self-check for breast cancer.
As Curvy Kate explained on its blog: ‘There are a heck of a lot more important things to be checking on your body than whether your arms are flexible enough to reach all the way around your own torso.
‘We want to encourage you guys to check your boobs and get to know what normal feels like… rather than doing these ridiculous body-shaming (and downright painful) demonstrations.’
A lot of women agree with them.
Because boob-checking is a far more important message.
And all bodies are beautiful.
You can find instructions on how to self-check your boobs here.
