Bay Area three-piece Be Calm Honcho have to be true to themselves.
The band's songwriting - lucid synth pop, fragrant electronics - is pieced together with lyrics that speak of real life experience.
Often harsh, often beautiful, the trio's latest cut 'Bad Man' finds Shannon Harney saluting her younger brother, who is currently serving a jail term.
She explains: "In and out of the justice system, various addictions, the whole gamut of trauma and trouble and family can go through. It's very personal, it's very dear to me and the themes it tackles are important to the people who gravitate towards my music."
The video for 'Bad Man' is incredibly ambitious, an intricate dance routine that also touches on the uncanny.
Directed by Pete Lee, with assistance from Kathleen Dycaico, and follows the interweaving stories of ten dancers. "I write mostly for the women in my life. I’m privileged to witness their unique journeys; popping bottles for triumphs and slow cooking for heartaches; we hold it down for each other and rise up accordingly. We each have our own history of trauma at the hands of men, our experiences are not the same and our demons come from different sources, but together we battle that toxicity, together we are essential and we are giant."
"This video witnesses an initiation ritual by a coven of Valkyries, the choosers of the slain. The initiant travels through the rites of passage to cast off that which does not serve her and she emerges born new, a strange creature, all-wise and weaponized."
