Sex cravings can be blocked easily, but just playing a game, if believed to a new study. Researchers have found playing a tile-matching puzzle video game can weaken the cravings for sex as well as for other addiction such as drugs, foods and sleeping too.
Details of the study are published in the Addictive Behaviors journal and it says playing for just three minutes may weaken the cravings by about one-fifth time.
Several participants in the study were asked to play Tetris during the day at random intervals. All were monitored for the cravings for seven days along with playing the game for the same period.
Professor Jackie Andrade from Plymouth University said playing game like Tetris, a visually-interesting game, occupies the mental processes supporting imagery, the experience of indulging in a particular activity or consuming a particular substance. With this imagining something vividly became tough.
Professor Jon May from Plymouth University added further impact of the game on craving was consistent throughout the seven days period as well as on all craving types.

“We think the Tetris effect happens because craving involves imagining the experience of consuming a particular substance or indulging in a particular activity. Playing a visually interesting game like Tetris occupies the mental processes that support that imagery; it is hard to imagine something vividly and play Tetris at the same time,” Prof Andrade adds.
Professor Jon Many, who is also with Plymouth, notes, “The impact of Tetris on craving was consistent across the week and on all craving types. People played the game 40 times on average but the effect did not seem to wear off. This finding is potentially important because an intervention that worked solely because it was novel and unusual would have diminishing benefits over time as participants became familiar with it.”
And finally, Professor Andrade concludes, “As a support tool, Tetris could help people manage their cravings in their daily lives and over extended time periods.”
The researchers wrapped up their finding with a suggested to everyone to play Tetris as it may help in managing the cravings daily and also in long run.
