Chvrches lead singer Lauren Mayberry has slammed sexist online trolls after receiving a barrage of abuse.
The 27-year-old named and shamed her attackers after receiving hideous abuse on social bulletin board 4Chan following the release of new single Leave A Trace.
After reading comments which, among other things, labelled her a “slut” and making a string of sexual suggestions, she urged people to read the abuse she suffered, the Daily Record reported.
Linking her Twitter feed to the message board, where many comments were made anonymously, British singer Lauren said: “Dear anyone who thinks misogyny isn’t real. It is and this is what it looks like.”
Many of the messages were written about Lauren in the video for the song, commenting on her appearance and clothes. Others were overtly sexual and some made reference to her breast size.
Lauren has spoken out in the past about the objectification of women in the music industry and online trolling.
Critics in this latest attack accused her of hypocrisy because she has a dress on in the promo and wet hair.
There is also a comment about Playboy shoots and the majority aren’t suitable for reproducing in a family newspaper.
Despite the level of the abuse being dished out, one anonymous poster wrote: “Dude she secretly loves the attention.”
Another added: “I thought Lavren was pure, why did she agree to dress like a slut?”
Lauren’s bandmates in Chvrches were also dismayed by the comments, saying: “PSA: apparently wet hair makes you a ‘slut’. Nice work, 4chan / humanity.”
The singer advised her haters to listen to a song from US TV drama Nashville with the lyrics: “I’m not going nowhere. You think you’ve got me scared. I’ll be the light at the end of this tunnel. I get stronger with every step...don’t put grave dirt on my grave just yet.”
