The two men accused of raping the 17-year-old girl are said to have phoned her just three days after the attack and offered to return her stolen mobile.
Hoping that cops would snare her attackers, she agreed to meet up with one of them.
But officers failed to track her movements - meaning the victim ended up parking off-road with her alleged rapist 1.5 kilometres away from one of the two checkpoints set up by plain clothes teams in Jalna, India.
Their failure to execute the trap properly meant the teenager was allegedly attacked again, despite thinking that cops were following her and ready to pounce.
The accused, 21-year-old Sanjay Havare, is then said to have stolen the victim's mother's phone.
He was then belatedly caught by the authorities as he tried to board a train out of town - and revealed the wherabouts of his 19-year-old accomplice Nitin Savle.
Both of the men were then taken into police custody.
Hapless police officers blamed "miscommunication" for the needless second attack.
The senior cop behind the botched operation, Inspector Vinod Ejjapawar, has been suspended until investigations are complete.
