It's not just this summer's movie Pixels; classic video games like Centipede, Missile Command and Asteroids are set for a revival in print as well, with Dynamite Entertainment announcing a pre-Comic-Con partnership with Atari that will see its classic video game properties given new life.
The new deal allows the New Jersey-based publisher — which also announced a new office in New York's famous Flatiron Building today — to publish new comics and graphic novels based on a select number of Atari properties, in addition to republishing the 1980s DC Comics series Atari Force, which has been out of print since its original release.
Central to the deal, however, is a hardcover retrospective of Atari's output from Pong forward, including concept art, behind-the-scenes photos and marketing images along with interviews with key personnel from the company.
In a statement, Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said that he was excited to "bring a modern twist" to the company's legacy. "Atari's roots in the comic book world and iconic art is a collector and video game enthusiast's dream. Our partnership is a fun way to expose our brand to a new generation and resonate with our longtime fans," he said.
Announcements for individual projects will follow in coming months.
