You fulfilled in life? It's one of the many questions posed in JennyHval's "That Battle Is Over," which has now been given a hypnotic and open-ended set of visuals that don't give up any easy answers.
Directed by Zia Anger, the clip to the organ-scored mood piece has Hval navigating a house, peeking in on various feminine figures as the tune plays on.
In the kitchen, a matronly woman stirs up batter for baked goods, while a younger lady works on her makeup skills in front of a bathroom mirror. Elsewhere, a mother and child play in bed. As Hval navigates the home, her wide narrative arcs around themes of loving yourself, the fallacy of consumerism, and the state of feminism and socialism. Visually, this leads each scene to unravel into a state of distress and possibly reconcile.
Anger explained in a statement of the video:
"I guess it goes back to '96 for me, and the 'girl power' mantra I've been repeating since I learned it from the Spice Girls. The female experience is far from singular (and even further from this white, suburban, American-retro dream), yet around every corner there is a common pain, a wisdom of ecstasy, and an obsession with the uncanny that we all share. Collaborating with an entirely female creative team (with the support of a few great gentlemen) gave birth to an exploration of Jenny's song and an inquiry into the sarcasm that pulses through it."
