While Leonard Nimoy is considered a hugely talented actor who rose to fame on Star Trek in the 1960s - a generation also know him from his appearances in The Big Bang Theory.
The comedy's beloved science fiction nerd Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons, idolised the 83-year-old actor, who died this morning, and fans have taken to Twitter to campaign for a tribute episode.
Leonard's wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed the star had passed away, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Nimoy died at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles, after being rushed to hospital after suffering from severe chest pain last week.
The elderly actor, famous for playing the sci-fi show's Mr Spock, has been in and out of hospitals multiple times in the last few months.
Of all of the movie and television franchises that are referenced in The Big Bang Theory, Star Trek is mentioned most often.
One fan wrote on Twitter today: "I'm now eagerly awaiting the Leonard Nimoy tribute episode of Big Bang Theory @LLAP."
Another posted on the social media site: "Expect @BigBang_CBS to pay tribute to Leonard Nimoy in a the next few episodes."
"@BigBang_CBS Is The Big Bang Theory going to make a tribute episode or clip to Leonard Nimoy because Star Trek / Sheldon feelings are real," another tweeted.
In one episode of The Big Bang Theory, half-Vulcan Spock, the action figure, is voiced by Leonard Nimoy and talks to Sheldon in his dreams.
In The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis, Penny, played by Kaley Cuoco, also presents Sheldon with a napkin signed by Leonard Nimoy when she saw him in the Cheesecake Factory.
He is so stunned he hugs Penny and thinks he can clone Leonard by using the DNA from the napkin.
Previously, the series also featured cameos from Star Trek: The Next Generation's LeVar Burton and Brent Spiner, as well as original cast member George Takei.
Will Wheaton, Wesley Crusher in The Next Generation, also appears in a number of episodes as Sheldon's "mortal enemy".
