"Too soon for an ISIS movie?"

*Warning: PIRATE RADIO presentation*

Millions of Iraqis have been forced to flee their homes in order to escape the barbarism of the Islamic State, traveling to northern Iraq for refuge.
Last month, Angelina Jolie was there to meet some of the terrified refugees and hear their harrowing stories.
Jolie, whose second directorial project, “Unbroken,” far exceeded box office expectations this winter, has proven she’s willing to take on challenges that cause others to hesitate. The rights to World War Two legend Louie Zamperini’s odyssey of a life had changed hands for years in Hollywood, with no one willing to commit to the work it would take to bring his story to the big screen. Jolie, however, boldly accepted the challenge and directed a two-hour stunner of a movie that did justice to Zamperini’s heroic tale. Now, she is proving once again that she has the guts to tell a story that needs to be told.
Jolie traveled to a Kurdish refugee camp in Dohuk, where over 2 million Iraqis have fled, to speak with victims of the Islamic State. She listened to their experiences and turned two of those tragic stories into short documentaries, which have been published exclusively with The Guardian.
The first film features a woman named Sabreen and her little sister, Dilvian. Sabreen began by describing how she was treated at the hands of Islamic terrorists. Her recollection is not for the faint of heart:
“For one hour a day they electrocuted me. They put electric cables to my head, my hands and my feet. I was crying and begging him to stop but he wouldn’t listen.”
This story was hard enough to listen to - I can’t imagine actually being on the receiving end of such torture or being forced to watch it as her little sister did. Although they managed to eventually escape from the terror, the brutal memories of their captivity remain.
In Jolie’s second film, a woman named Amusha recounts how she and her daughter were forcibly separated before her daughter was kidnapped by Islamic State militants. Through tears, Amusha said her daughter is “like a shining star.”
Jolie has done much more than make movies to share horrifying stories like these. To bring more awareness to the barbarism of the Islamic State, the Hollywood actress and director has opened an academic center at the London School of Economics (LSE) in order to combat global issues like rape and women’s role in politics. Her motivation could not be any clearer:
“If you were to ask me who I think this centre is for, I picture someone who is not in this room today,” Jolie said. “I think of a girl I met in Iraq three weeks ago. She is 13 years old, but instead of going to school, she sits on the floor in a makeshift tent.”
Islamic terrorism cannot be swept under the rug. Fox News’ Harris Faulkner recently listed ISIS’ cruel guidelines for women, which include such standards as these: Girls can marry at age 9, they must stay behind closed doors, beauty salons are the work of the devil, and women should not be corrupted by a job. When Faulkner finished listing these harsh rules, she had no choice but to describe the terrorist group as an ‘army of pedophiles.’
Jolie has proven she is one of those rare Hollywood celebrities who is not just talking about change - she’s leading it. It’s unfortunate that the first headlines that come up with a Google search of her name still largely includes gossip about her personal life. Her efforts on behalf of the victims of terrorism should be her real claim to fame. Hopefully her new films, and the subjects they follow, get the paparazzi-like attention they deserve.

"Hey, there's no CRYING in PORN"

*Warning: PIRATE RADIO presentation*
PORNstars should be experts at 'faking it', shouldn't they?
After all, the leading lights of the adult movie world are renowned for moaning, groaning and displaying any number of other emotions on demand.
But can they fake crying?
Oscar worthy? Porn stars show off their acting talents to see if they can fake crying as well as they fake... other things
Adult website WoodRocket.com put both male and female performers' acting abilities to the test, inviting them to step in front of the camera and shed tears.
The resulting footage shows them doing their utmost to prove their credentials,
While some do a decent enough job, others just can't seem to muster up even a sad face, never mind tears, with one even asking the cameraman - before he's made any attempt - "are we done yet?"

SIMON COWELL targets Latin America

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

Simon Cowell is taking intensive Spanish lessons as he kicks off his search for a Latino version of One Direction.
The X Factor mogul’s new show La Banda will trawl the US, Mexico and South America for the next big Latin American boyband, with singer Ricky Martin as head judge.
Simon, 55, will not appear on the show himself but is swotting up on the lingo to help him in his quest to conquer the vast untapped market.
He said: “I don’t speak Spanish properly yet, but I’m learning. It’s a Spanish-speaking show.”
It starts in Los Angeles next month and Ricky, 43 – who started out with Latin boyband Menudo before going global as a solo artist – will manage the winning five-piece.
Simon added: “The idea is simple – we’re going to put together a group of guys between 14 to 18. It’s a Latin show – they’ll sing in Spanish and English.”
Simon – whose X Factor 2010 runners-up One Direction have become the world’s biggest boyband – said the new show will be the first of its kind in the Latin market.
Head judge: Ricky Martin
He said: “There’s nothing at the moment like this. It’s to fill what me and Ricky feel is a massive gap in the market and to give five kids like this a real opportunity.”
The show will take in US cities including Miami, Florida, and Houston, Texas, before moving on to Central and South American and the Caribbean.
Simon added: “We’ve had a lot of success in this area with 1D so it’s a great prize. You have to create magic.”

RICKY MARTIN gets hit-or-miss new show

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

Ricky Martin will judge on Simon Cowell’s new TV show La Banda.
The Livin’ La Vida Loca star will both executive produce and serve on the judging panel of the reality singing competition.
The show, which will air on Univision in America, will see Ricky search for the perfect five male contestants from United States, Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico to star in a band managed by him.
And in a press release announcing his new position, Ricky said he won’t be taking any tips from music mogul Simon when it comes to his judging style.
“Simon is a brutally honest judge, which is very important,” Ricky said. “[But] I’m a little bit more nurturing.”
Ricky is no stranger to Latin groups, having first made a name for himself as part of the band Menudo.
And the 43-year-old singer said he was thrilled to have been invited to be a part of the progamme.
“The phone rings, and Simon Cowell calls and he says, ‘Ricky, I would like to meet with you,’ ” Ricky said. “We started throwing ideas and I was fascinated by this concept. I was fascinated by this show. I said, ‘Of course I want to be a part of this! Thank you for inviting me.’ ”
“It’s an amazing platform that I wish I had when I was starting in my career.”
Ricky also expressed his excitement on his Twitter page, writing: ‘Thanks @SimonCowell , we are going to put together the next Latin supergroup! #SoyLaBanda.’
Ricky won’t be alone on the panel, but his fellow judges have yet to be revealed.
Auditions for the show kick off in Los Angeles on March 7th, before going nationwide.

JARED LETO vs The Joker

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

In this week's Billboard cover story double threat actor and musician Jared Leto talks packing on the pounds to play the Joker in the all-star comic-book supervillain movie Suicide Squad, the success of his rock band 30 Seconds to Mars and why he is "terminally dissatisfied."

Leto opens up about yo-yoing between weight classes for his upcoming role as the Joker, his second film role in seven years.

"It can be an incredibly rewarding, but also destructive, thing to do," he says of yo-yoing between weight classes for a role. "Your body changes forever." He has had a lot of actors call him for advice on extreme weight regimens, he says, "and I always try to talk people out of it."

He continues to share why he was drawn to playing role.

" The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character -- that's what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?" Leto tells Billboard.

Lastly, he talks keeping his acting and music career separate, contrary to what many other artists are doing.

"When we first signed a record deal in '98, it was like breaking a commandment." he says, explaining that he was wary of how people were judged for trying to cross over. "Now, if you can talk, you put an album out."

Should JENNIFER HUDSON sing or act?

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

Jennifer Hudson never wants to have to choose between acting and singing.

The former American Idol contestant has shown her multi-talented skills with both hugely successful albums and a critically-acclaimed acting career.

But the 33-year-old star says she is happy having her fingers in more than one pie, and doesn't favour one industry over the other.

"I give 100%, whether it's singing or acting,' Jennifer told Billboard magazine. 'I hope I never have to choose between the two."

Prior to starring in 2006 movie Dreamgirls, Jennifer had never contemplated the possibility of an acting career.

But after her mother encouraged her, she went on to star in the film that earned her an Oscar.

"I had never even thought of acting, to be honest,' Jennifer said. 'It was actually my mom who was like, 'Jenny, I think you could act.' I'm like, 'Yeah, whatever, Mama.' Then I turned around and won an Academy Award on my first film. The only other acting experience that I had was [when I performed] on the Disney Wonder cruise ship."

But despite being hugely talented at both acting and singing, Jennifer insists she always focuses entirely on one medium when embarking on a new project.

And Jennifer knows that if she was to take on both an acting and singing role at the same time, she wouldn't be able to give her all in either.

'I don't want to have too many irons in the fire because something suffers,' she said. 'I like to focus on whatever it is I'm doing at the time. If it's film, I don't want to sing at all. If it's singing, I don't want to do film at all. Music was always first for me, it's my love and passion. But I'm a tree with many branches, and there's so much more to express."

SCARJO "Check out my new song"

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

Scarlett Johansson has released an awesome new single from her girl band the Singles.
The 30-year-old actress is part of the electro-pop group with musicians Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris, Julia Haltigan and Este from Haim, a band that's preparing to join Taylor Swift on tour.
The Singles' new song Candy is inspired by multiple female songwriters and Scarlett intended for the tune to be a little lighthearted.
"The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls," she told Rolling Stone. "I love Grimes. And I love the Bangles. And I love the Go-Go's. I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke."
Scarlett is the lead singer on Candy, which is just over three minutes long.
Candy was produced by TV on the Radios Dave Sitek, who has worked with Scarlett before. He collaborated with the star on her debut 2008 studio album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, which is comprised of a series of Tom Waits covers. Dave has published the single on his Federal Prism record label.
Scarlett previously spoke about how much she enjoyed working on Anywhere I Lay My Head.
She recorded the album over five weeks in 2007 at Dockside Studios in Maurice, Louisiana.
'Releasing an album is like a little baby and you just have to nourish it and you need time for it,' Scarlett told UK TV show Daybreak.

BEN BERNSCHNIEDER is NOT a PORN photographer

We are holding the book “Diamond Times” in our hands. And yes, it really sparkles. A colorful, cheeky and joyful journey through the photographs of German artist Ben Bernschneider.

Coming from the advertising scene, the multitalent is used to putting out his creative feelers to many different directions. He does movies, photographs, and writes and calls many awards his own already. It is his artistic soul that always directs him to break out, to impel and to reinvent himself over and over again. His favorite subjects? Preferably pretty girls, summery lifestyle and classy cars. Which we clearly don´t mind to indulge in either.

How would you describe yourself?
One of the good guys.
A beautiful image…
… is something that makes my heart skip and my knees weak. Usually with palm trees and/or girls on it.
When I click through your portfolio on your website I see lots of classical commercial work. On Instagram I feel that you work from the recent months is quite different though. Do you break out in a new direction?
Absolutely. After 4 years of adapting and copying people who shoot fashion and doing things that I thought would suit me best for making some money, I now started creating things that my heart wants. I now love my pictures. And I know that the money will follow.
Analog Photography is the great love of many photographers. What´s the thing that excites you about analogue photography?
It think first of all it is not the final product that excites me most. It’s the handling, the physicality and the way I shoot when I shoot film  – and the playing around with something that belongs to my youth, to good times and to an whole era that I love dearly. Waiting for the film to develop alone makes so happy and excited. And a very important aspect for me: it’s fun and separates me from my assigned work, which is 99% shot digitally. To the final photograph: it looks better, crisp but never that oversharp, the skin color is always nicer.

GOS_09

You come from the advertising industry, but you quit. Do you benefit a lot from this work experience for your photography?
I was a copywriter, I wrote TV movies, I wrote a novel, I directed commercials and music videos. And I spent years feeling so bad being „jack of all trades – king of none“ thinking „why the fuck didn’t I know earlier what to do with my life?“ But as time passed by I learned that it is so good knowing all sides to the story and the business. Looking back I thought it all was a waste of my lifetime – but now I feel that I have a certain maturity.
How difficult is it really to live from being a photographer?
Some months it’s hard, some not. The thing is that it shouldn’t matter. I do it because I have to do it. And most of my money still comes in from being a director and editor.
Art and commerce – does that fit together for you?
I don’t really know what makes something art. I guess all personal work that excites you is art. And everything with commercial endeavors is commerce. But if people come up to you and book you to get the style of your personal stuff then both things get mixed. So all commercial work where the „artist“ has the last saying remains art, I guess.

1974+Kopie

In December you’ve released your first successful book “DIAMOND TIMES”. How long did it take to find the title?
A bit longer. The working title was „GIRLS ON FILM“. But I needed something, a term, that described a feeling that I had 1986 when I was 10 years old, living in Brazil. I had nothing in mind but girls and movies. Living in Brasilia (a spitting image of the suburbs where kids out of Steven Spielbergs movies used to live) me and the others from our American school ran into the mall to watch THE GOONIES and BACK TO THE FUTURE dreaming of some glorious days to come. Sadly I haven‘t returned to this place since 24 years. But nothing in my whole life had a deeper impact than this popcultural decade. Sometimes nowadays, when I am shooting pictures, this feeling returns. Then I realize that these times full of youth and exploration and carelessness exist detached from the 80s. Times that mean so much to me and will always touch my heart. I call these times: DIAMONDTIMES. And yeah, it fits my logo, the diamond.
Your second book is already work in progress. What will you do differently compared to the first one?
Technically I will shoot most of it on slide film, which I love dearly. The colors, the high range of contrast blows me away. And I will try to always make it better. Doing a piece of work is always therapeutic, it’s always a catharsis because when choosing the final pictures I learn a lot about myself and why I evolved in a certain direction. Besides that half of the book will be shot in the States. LA and Palm Springs. I hope it all works out a I imagine it.
You have won a number of awards, had many publications and made several videos. Until today, what are you most proud of?
Oh, I don’t know. Nothing yet, really. Maybe being interviewed by C-Heads! And shooting a worldwide campaign for American Apparel would probably make my chest proudly burst to pieces.
You started as Jonas. Now you are Ben. Already an idea who you will be next?
Let me explain that: while I was living in Cologne and writing movie scripts in a big production circle, the protagonist of my films was always named „Ben“, so the people nicknamed me „Ben Bernschneider“. The alliteration with the two „B“s got stuck in everyones head, but I forgot about it. Years later, after working 5 years as a copywriter in an Ad Agency I had a nervous breakdown and decided to stop working in an office and pursue my dreams of creating pictures again. I needed to shed my skin, so If people looked my work up on the internet they shouldn’t find my advertisement work. Overnight I was Ben again. And free. I will probably stick to that.
Where can we find you on a Friday night?
At home cocooning with my fiancée Henrike Fehrs (a german actress), drinking beer & gimlets, watching 80s movies and making plans for what happens at daytime.
The most important thing in life is?
To have something in life that you love.
Many Thanks for your time!
You are more than welcome. I love C-Heads truly. <3

"Remember why you are a photographer"

“Being a photographer is one of the hardest things I could have imagined. There are moments when things fall into place, people love your work, jobs flow in and the pictures take themselves. Then times when you are poor, you stop liking your own work and getting a shot takes forever.”

Australian photographer and founder of the swimwear brand BowerRupert Tapperspeaks out honest words when it comes to his profession, and also about moments in his life that have influenced and led him onto his chosen path. His current long-term stop over London is only one of many places that he had visited or lived in, as he loves getting inspired by the new. Well, we absolutely love browsing through his images that are vigorous and addictive and suddenly feel like floating on an emeraldgreen shore.

Some years ago in an interview you described yourself as fun, curious and confused. Have you changed in the meantime or is that still how would state your personality? And if so, what are you most confused about?
I think that has changed a little. I am probably a lot more serious now but keep reminding myself to have fun and enjoy what I do whilst trying to push myself. Being a creative is a very hard thing as I feel you critique yourself much more than anyone else. I think I will always be confused to some degree. If we had all the answers that would be no fun now would it.
You like to create cinematic stories. Do you have a clear vision of your story in mind already before shooting or just a rough idea and more details emerge later on during the process?
I try to imagine the whole story and also pull references however most of the time on the day the story changes and I just do what feels and looks right. I should probably just loosen the brief on myself as it can be frustrating when you aren’t getting what you had envisioned.
It took you some time to have the courage to pursue your dream of being a photographer. “One day I had an epiphany spurred on by a personal event and I sold my car and moved from Sydney to Paris to begin the journey.” Can you tell us what this personal event was or is it something too personal?
Well basically I met a nice Swedish girl when I was living abroad whom was becoming a photographer herself, I spent some time with her a few months later and she had a really nice way of looking at things. I was going to go and live with her and just take pictures. Not long after my visit she took her own life out of the blue and It rang a bell in my head. I had to just do it, I knew.
Have your expectations of a photographer´s life been fulfilled? Was it even harder than you expected?
Being a photographer is one of the hardest things I could have imagined. There are moments when things fall into place, people love your work, jobs flow in and the pictures take themselves. Then times when you are poor, you stop liking your own work and getting a shot takes forever. You have to have the motivation to push through and remember why you are doing it, take a fresh angle and be happy you are not sitting behind a desk.
You are based in London now. How do you like it and what happened with Paris?
London is good for now. I tend to move around a lot. Have spent time in NYC, Berlin and a few other places. I like to keep myself inspired with new people and places and love discovering new things. Paris had a purpose ( learn how to take pictures and light shots ) I think London is a lot more open and in a state of constant flux.
What do you miss most about Australia? I guess the seaside, right? As you also started you own swimwear label where you draw on a childhood lived by the waters of Sydney´s fairy bower…
Yes Australia is a beautiful place. So many beaches and so much sunshine, beautiful people and so on, its also super laid back. This was a big adjustment. I have found some amazing coastal spots in Europe however to quench my thirst for the ocean.
Your most happy moment in 2014?
Hard to pin point really but starting Bower, shooting for L’Officiel and Morrocco where some nice highlights.
Your best life lesson in 2014?
Be up front about everything and put it in writing!
