ASM "Masking" ft. MF Doom (release)

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

ASM"Masking" (ft. DOOM) (video)
Hip-hop duo ASM (a.k.a. A State of Mind) are getting particularly cinematic with the animated, samurai-style adventure video supporting their epic new The Jade Amulet release's "Masking." With a title like that, it's no surprise thatDOOM appears, but he spits on this one via a newly unveiled alternate guise of "King Dumile." You can see the rappers face off now.

The track meshes together movie house strings and thick, soulful beats, which were arranged by by FADE and the Black Knight Chamber Orchestra. Above this, we get enchanted and battle-ready bars from everyone involved, as well as plot points discussing legacy, death and the Jade Amulet's all-encompassing power, "to which no man is immune."

DOOM's verse is especially gravelly, with a press release noting that he's assuming the role of a metal-faced monarch "who rules over the kingdom of Vabaria with an iron fist." If you were wondering about the origins of his latest regal moniker, it might be worth reminding you that his birth name is Daniel Dumile.

You'll find the "Masking" video below, while The Jade Amulet was officially released today (October 16). You can pick it up on Bandcamp as a digital release or as a physical two-LP set that includes a 40-page comic book.

BOMBA ESTEREO "Fiesta" release

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

Bomba Estéreo"Fiesta" (ft. Will Smith) (video)
Actor Will Smith recently returned to music after a lengthy absence by dropping a verse on a remix of "Fiesta" by Colombia's Bomba Estéreo. Now, Smith has popped up in the video for the same track.

The clip for this Latin-leaning EDM banger shows a wild rave going down at a warehouse. The party shots are intercut with shots of a man wearing a hood approaching; this figure eventually turns out to be Smith, who delivers his Spanish-inflected verse while energetic dance writhe and gyrate all around him. The Fresh Prince is an awfully long way from the playground in West Philadelphia here.

MAUDLIN STRANGERS "Gingerale" release

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*
Maudlin Strangers
Maudlin Strangers is a project dominated by the creativity of just one person: Agoura Hills native Jake Hays.
Darkly enticing electro-pop with a rock edge, the band were recently hand-picked by Cold War Kids to support them on their upcoming North American tour.
Ahead of this, Clash is able to present the video for new single 'Gingerale'. Amidst the swooping chorus and glistening verse lies something rather more mysterious, with the lyrics belying a hidden melancholy.
The visuals are remarkably simple yet wholly effective: a vinyl record player trundles along in a woodland break. Check it out now.

THE INTERNET "Get Away" release

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

The Internet"Get Away" (video)
Odd Future might not be broken up after all, but Syd the Kyd and Matt Martians are still focusing most of their attention on their band the Internet. They just shared a video for their song "Get Away" from the recent album Ego Death

The video for this introspective, thudding soul song is a combination of a few different scenes. We see the full Internet band performing on a dusty, empty lot, and they also party it up with bottles of bubbly. Meanwhile, Syd hangs out in her bedroom and clashes with her girlfriend, which helps to illuminate the romantic angst of the lyrics.

Watch the clip below.

ALEX CUBA "No Esperes Mas" ft. Anya Marina (release)

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

Alex Cuba"No Esperes Más" (video)
Canadian-born Afro-Cuban jazz musician Alex Cuba returned with his latest LP Healer earlier this year, and now Exclaim! is giving you the first look at his new video for "No Esperes Más."

The track is a collaboration between Cuba and Anya Marina, while the video is an artsy animated visual interpretation of the music. Intricately designed images of an underwater scene float across the screen, moving in time with the rhythms of the song. Two lovers meet and swirl about on the seafloor, as Cuba and Marina wax soulful and romantic in Spanish and English, respectively.

It was created using green screen technology and food colouring, brought to life by artist Facundo Gastiazoro and producer Taylor Fox. Dreamy and fluid, the video makes the perfect pairing for the smooth groove of the song.

Watch the colourful, entrancing video for "No Esperes Más" in the player below.

The CARLY POTTS Mystery

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*
Carly Potts inquestCarly Potts earned hundreds of pounds a night dancing at a popular gentleman's club in Blackpool to "make ends meet" during her studies.
But it is feared the 26-year-old fell in with the wrong crowd and began taking cocaine.
The inquest heard how the social work student text a friend in the early hours on the day of her death that she would have a "broken nose in the morning" following a bust-up with an unknown man.
In one message she said: "Just come back to the hotel alone. Scared to go out partying with the guys and girls, might be going para."
Her body was later discovered in her locked room at the Plaza Beach hotel at around 1.30pm.

POPULAR: Carly Potts was described as a "popular and intelligent student"
She was found by the hotel manager.
The hearing was told how Miss Potts, of Preston, Lancs, had been grieving for her mother who hanged herself in 2009.
The inquest heard how Miss Potts referenced the death in various texts to friends.
Cyprus-born Miss Potts had been working at the Eden lap dancing club more regularly as she waited to enter her third year at the University of Central Lancashire.
She returned to the Plaza Beach alone in the early hours of July 19 and her texts to fellow dancers at the club became more concerning.

GRIEVING: The inquest heard how Carly Potts was grieving the death of her mum
A text message sent to dancer Mischa Campbell indicated an intention to take her own life, the hearing was told.
Concerned friends reported her missing and rushed to find her.
Miss Campbell said in a statement: "Up until that time she always seemed okay but she would speak about her mum.
"We arranged to stay at the hotel together but on Saturday I decided to work in Southport.
"She didn't want to come so we separated at 5pm. I left her blowdrying her hair and doing her make-up in Eden.
"I suspected she would have been drinking and possibly using cocaine as I knew it was something she may do."

Giving evidence Carly's father Ian Farrow, of Kent, said Miss Potts had moved with her mother to Preston to be closer to family following their divorce.
The father-of-four said: "Carly was about 19 when her mother hanged herself. She was living with her mum and she found her body.
"At the back of my mind I knew you don't get over something like that but I think she was doing her best to move forward.
"When what happened to her mum happened I more or less expected a phone call that one of my girls would have taken their life.
"The last person I expected was Carly.
"I would have been there for her but she kept things to herself. When I knew she was a dancer I thought cocaine was part of the territory but I didn't have any concerns that she was into drugs."

TRAGEDY: Carly Potts was born in Cyprus
In a statement, her friend Sarah Harrison, who also worked at the Eden club, said: "I took 'feeling para' to mean she had drugs and was feeling paranoid. I said I would ring her in 20 minutes.
"Then I fell asleep and woke up about lunch time."
Recording a conclusion of suicide, coroner Derek Baker said: "Carly had sent quite moving texts indicating that she was considering self-harming.
"There are further texts where the gist is that Carly is suffering and in some despair at this point.
"It is clear she was a bright, loving, popular and intelligent girl.
"In the days leading up to the tragedy I don't think there were any warning signs or expressions of intent because I am sure friends or members of her family would have taken action.

PAIN: Carly Potts sent out text messages to her friend indicating an intention to take her o...
"She texted her friends and her intentions were clear. They do indicate an intention to self-harm.
"I don't think it was a cry for help. Her texts suggest a finality and a settled decision.
"The alcohol and drugs would simply deepen the depression or despair she was feeling at that time in the early hours of Sunday morning and reinforced her decision."
After the hearing, her grandmother said: "She was a very caring person. We were very proud of her."
Alice O'Sullivan, a senior lecturer from the school of social work at UCLan, said staff and students were "shocked" to hear of Miss Potts' death.

The GamerGate Effect

GamerGate: Zoe Quinn's ordeal opened the dark trapdoor to the world of online misogyny
Women are pretending to be men online in a bid to avoid the vicious misogynist abuse that has become routine, a British academic claims.
A survey of more than 100 prominent female technology journalists found one in five participants were so intimidated by threats of violence and rape that they took steps to mask their gender.
As part of her bid to uncover the extent of cyber-sexism Catherine Adams, senior lecturer in communications at Nottingham Trent University , discovered a massive 62% of respondents had been subject to sexist abuse.
Although her research was confined to the field of technology journalism, Adams said it should serve as a grim warning that sexism is not dying - and may actually be flourishing in the "cesspits" of the internet.

"It was chilling to find out that that this kind of abuse seems to be the norm," she told Mirror Online.
"They continue to face a barrage of death threats, rape threat and bomb threats," she continued.
"They told me about panic attacks and nervous breakdowns, reporting treatment which was brutal, devastating and frightening.
"This sort of online abuse should be regarded as a violent act because it can have physical repercussions, forcing women to move home or jobs against their will."

A barrage of rape threats: Catherine Adams warns it may take blood on the floor before the issue is taken seriously
The academic spoke to a range of women including games developer Zoe Quinn, who came under attack from a group of men known as GamerGate .
Quinn, 27, received countless rape threats and was forced to leave her home.
"Men are like wounded dinosaurs, fighting to stop women getting involved in places they used to be comfortable," Adams added.
"Women tell me that men get more and more angry the more successful they become."
Before publishing the study, Adams down her social media profiles to protect her own safety, with her employer taking steps to protect the security of workplace emails and other sensitive emails.
But she said this level of support was all too rare and women were often left to fend for themselves after coming under attack.
"It doesn't seem to matter until someone's blood is spilled," she said.
