Christine Chubbuck was "terribly depressed" before her death, her mum said
Intensely professional Chubbuck shot herself in the head during a news broadcast on July 15 1974 for a US news channel.
Her colleagues who saw the on-screen suicide spoke of how her left hand shook uncontrollably, while her right hand lifted the revolver to the back of her head.
Before killing herself during her broadcast she said: "In keeping with Channel 40's policy of bringing you the latest in blood and guts and in living colour you are going to see another first – attempted suicide."

Chubbuck didn't leave a suicide note – but had told friends and family in the days before she wanted to take her own life.
Depressed, single and alone, it is widely believed Chubbuck killed herself for personal rather than professional reasons.
"She was a spinster at 29 and it bothered her," her mum Margaretha said as her daughter lay dying in hospital.
"She was terribly, terribly, terribly depressed."
Underground Internet forums have been awash with speculation about whether a copy of the footage showing the death exists.
All copies were reportedly destroyed at the request of the Chubbuck family after the grisly suicide.

People claim to have seen Chubbuck's suicide on early internet sites and FBI training videos – but no one has followed this up with solid proof.
It is not surprising the footage has been dubbed "a Holy Grail" by film experts.
Home-recording equipment was extremely rare in 1974. There are no known recorded copies.
"I don't know to this day where it is," Chubbuck's brother Greg told People.
WXLT lawyers told staff "do not, under any circumstances, show the tape" in the frantic moments after her on-air death.
Now 42 years on, the search is likely to be fuelled once more with the release of two films – Christine and Kate Plays Christine – telling the story of televison's first on-air suicide.
