The great and the good of Hollywood get ready to celebrate the very best of film at the Oscars tomorrow night – so it’s only right to shame the worst as well.
That’s just what the British Academy of Rubbish Films and Terrible Acting (Barftas) have done, singling out the most terrible films and performances from the last year.
Johnny Depp, Tom Hardy and Simon Pegg are among this year’s ‘winners’ in what is described as the British answer to the Razzies.
And there was even a special award for Tim Roth for his performance as disgraced former FIFA President Sepp Blatter in the massive flop United Passions, which took just $918 at the US box office, the worst in its history.
Tom Hardy won the Worst Accent Award at the Barftas for his portrayal of the Kray twins in Legend, pictured, specifically for voicing Ronnie, right, 'like the love-child of Alan Partridge and Dick Emery'
Simon Pegg's Absolutely Anything, pictured, also starring Kate Beckinsale and the Monty Python cast, in which he has the power to do anything he likes, was named the Worst British Film
This year’s event was a close run thing, according to organisers, with several films fighting it out in terms of awfulness.
Barfta spokesman Camilla Wright said: ‘With the prospect of BREXIT looming and Britain facing an uncertain future on its own, we're delighted to see that appalling film-making and terrible acting is one area in which we can feel confident of being world-leaders.’
Despite starring homegrown comedy favourite Pegg, being directed by Monty Python veteran Terry Jones and featuring the rest of the Python gang, Absolutely Anything was named Worst British Film.
It followed Pegg’s disillusioned teacher who is granted god-like abilities by a group of wacky aliens – played by the Pythons – but was labelled a ‘flabby misfire’ by critics and made a paltry £2.7million at the box office.
Meanwhile Depp was named Worst Actor for his performance in Mordecai, where he plays the title role of a conman art dealer who gets involved in an elaborate heist.
But the Barfta judges said: ‘Australia, If the dog-smuggling case doesn't get him [Depp] prison time, maybe you want to take another look at Mortdecai because the performance is just criminal.’
Entourage won the Worst International Film gong, with the panel - made up of critics and industry professionals - describing it as 'just a shallow succession of cameos'
The special Brown Envelope Award went to veteran British character actor Roth, who was also nominated for Worst Actor and Worst Accent as Blatter.
The film was funded by the organisation and released before the corruption scandal erupted and essentially consigned it to the dustbin.
Tom Hardy has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars this year, but his turn as twin gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray in Legend saw him win the Worst Accent award for playing the latter, with judges describing him as ‘the love-child of Alan Partridge and Dick Emery’.
Worst International Film went to Entourage, the big screen version of the popular TV show, which was roundly panned by critics despite featuring a cameo from the MailOnline’s own Piers Morgan.
Hardy was also nominated for Worst British Actor, with the panel - made up of judges and industry professionals - describing his performance as the brothers as a 'big screen Hale and Pace homage'
Adam Sandler, pictured centre, is so 'regarded' by the Barftas that he has his own category for Worst Comedy, with Pixels, pictured, one of the nominees, although The Ridiculous Six was eventually declared the 'winner'
Worst Comedy NOT starring Adam Sandler went to the Reese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara-led caper Hot Pursuit, while Worst Comedy starring Sandler went to the first of his Netflix films, The Ridiculous Six, although judges said Pixels or The Cobbler would have been equally worthy winners.
In a surprise move Worst Director was shared between Dan Mazer for gross-out comedy Dirty Grandpa that ‘may have finally destroyed Robert DeNiro’s reputation’, and The Danish Girl director Tom Hooper, apparently just for being Tom Hooper.
The Smuggest Film of the Year went to Oscar Best Picture nominee The Big Short for ‘making us root for the banks’.
Meanwhile Sean Penn was ‘honoured’ for his ‘outstanding contribution’ to Barfta thanks to his hitman flick The Gunman and his controversial interview with Mexican druglord El Chapo.
We Are Your Friends, starring Zac Effron (pictured) as a DJ, was nominated for Worst International Film
