Déjala decidir activists protested topless yesterday to protect the victims of rape against forced pregnancy by calling on Congress to decriminalize abortion in Peru.
The group of activists began their peaceful and topless protest yesterday afternoon on Avenida Abancay before national police began to remove them with force.
Their manifestation involved leaving fliers where clandestine abortion services are offered in the streets and their bare bodies read with phrases such as “I was raped” and “I had an abortion.”
Yesterday, Congress held a debate on the bill calling to decriminalize abortion. As reported by news media worldwide, Congressman Juan Carlos Eguren spoke on the issue where he made controversial statements angering many groups.
“It is almost impossible for a pregnancy to occur after any street violation, because it produces a state of stress, a state of shock in the person.”
Since Congress most recently archived the bill of decriminalization of abortion on March 27, social groups within Peru and international have been calling on Congress to reconsider its strict policy.
