ITV faces calls for Coleen Nolan to be sacked after the Loose Women host compared asking for a ‘support gay marriage’ cake to one showing support for Islamic State (ISIS).
The presenter made the comments while hosting the ITV programme yesterday, and was joined by Janet Street-Porter and Jamelia, as they discussed the ruling made in Belfast today which found that Ashers Bakery unlawfully discriminated by refusing to make a pro-same-sex marriage cake.
Nolan said someone in a similar situation should “just never go back to that shop”, and “probably say to all of your gay friends don’t go there…”
She went on to compare a “support gay marriage” cake to one supporting ISIS, the militant group which publicly executes gay people.
She said: “What about if someone walked in and said I want a cake and I want the whole Islamic State [ISIS] on it, and how I support them killing our people.”
Street-Porter said she thought Coleen was right.
Fans of the show took to Twitter to call for a public apology or retraction, while others said she should be sacked for the comment.
One user tweeted at Nolan saying: “Your comment comparing supporting gay rights with ISIS is so offensive, I feel you should issue a public apology.”
“I hope you get fired for that @NolanColeen,” wrote another.
“Can someone explain to #coleennolan that being gay isn’t a choice but being in a terrorist organisation or a supporter of one is a choice,” said one.
Another added: “Coleen Nolan could have easily expressed her opinion without likening gay people to the most barbaric terrorist organisation on the planet.”
Back in 2007, Nolan caused controversy when she said “there is only so much I want to accept”, and that gay couples should not be allowed to adopt.
ITV has declined to comment on the issue.
