West London Grime MC, AJ Tracey returns with visuals to his football inspired track False 9.
In recent years, there has been a development in music and football’s relationship as rap and grime have become more involved, with the likes of Stormzy, Desiigner and Paul Pogba teaming up through their sponsor, Adidas. Now avid football fan AJ Tracey joins forces with Nike and Tottenham Hotspurs with the release of his latest single. The launch of False 9 caps off a stellar performance from the MC on Friday, at an event in Five Miles where he revealed the new Tottenham Hotspurs Nike kit ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
False 9 is a Baza- produced banger which is jam-packed with football references. The title of the song False 9 is in fact football related. Although the term is quite new to the football dictionary, the position is quite archaic. False 9 is essentially a striker who drops deeps, i.e. he drifts back into midfield rather staying around the penalty box for various tactical reasons. The Ladbroke Grove’s MC further develops the term by spitting on the hook, “They call man false 9/ I can play anywhere and I shine/I got more than a lot on the line”.
For those that don’t know, AJ Tracey is a connoisseur for football puns, with his latest track being no different, “Pace abuse, I chase cheques like Aubameyang”, AJ is saying he chases money like Borussia Dortmund’s Pierrie- Emerick Aubameyang who once sprinted 30 metres in 3.7 seconds while at Dortmund’s training camp (quick fact: this set was almost a second faster than Usain Bolt’s record-breaking 100m). An AJ Tracey track just wouldn’t be complete without a couple of nods to his beloved club, ”I used to hold up the line like Puyol/ Bet you thought I was gonna say Dier”, Yep, AJ is comparing FC Barcelona central midfielder legend, Carles Puyol to Spurs very own defensive midfielder, Eric Dier. This bar is followed by, “I’m a midfield maestro like Eri/ Bet you thought I was gonna’ say Modric.” Both the past and present of the North London midfield get a line on this, with a shoutout to now Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, and their current ‘golazo’ Christian Eriksen.
The video comes courtesy of JMornix which shows AJ behind the scenes of a photoshoot surrounded by the 2017/2018 Spurs gear, while he spits his bars styled in their new home shirt. The photoshoot also features special appearances from Copa90 hosts Poet and Vujanic, grime artist Big Zuu and DJ/Presenter Snoochie Shy, and cuts to scenes of live footage from his gig on Friday.
So there you have it, a very clever and well written song accompanied by an alright video (that’s generous coming from an Arsenal fan lol), but nevertheless no matter what team you support, if you’re a football fans you’ll love this track.
Check out the video above.
