*VIVID RADIO is on the air*
If you think you're living with terrible roommates or an less-than-ideal landlord, Gregory Pepper and His Problems are here to remind you that they've got it worse in the new video for "My Roommate Is a Snake and the Landlord's a Bat."
The track comes from the group's Black Metal Demo Tape, which arrived earlier this year and delivered "punishingly heavy pop" tunes that touch on cheery themes like "despair," "alienation" and "a maybe too healthy love of slasher flicks."
The freshly unveiled video for "My Roommate Is a Snake and the Landlord's a Bat" is unsurprisingly dark, interspersing ominous black-and-white nature shots of cliffs, shores and the full moon with clips of burning churches, a terrified puppy and a nightmare-inducing veiled figure moving towards the camera.
The video was the result of a creative collaboration with director Jaime Hogge, whom Pepper has been working with since 2009.
"We have a shared misanthropy and place prudish standards on our respective work. We also both really like beer and metal," Pepper tells VIVID "I seem to recall the concept for 'My Roommate Is a Snake and the Landlord's a Bat' came from a conversation about how there haven't been any effectively creepy music videos since Marilyn Manson wore a wedding veil and rode a pig in that 'Sweet Dreams' cover. Okay, that's a pretty grandiose over-exaggeration, but still."
He adds: "Shot in Guelph and Toronto, the visuals are supposed to establish a lumbering sense of dread that heightens as the song progresses. We recently played a show where the whole band wore these dead, emotionless masks and it really did create a palpable unease in the room. This video gets bonus points for not using any 'air guitar' type pantomime or even showing my bare face. I give it a rating of 6.66 upside down crosses."
