Comedians with talent-driven television shows continue to dominate book sales and Amy Schumer is no exception. She’ll join her colleagues as an author, specifically of personal essays and anecdotes, with her upcoming book, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo. It’s a topical title promising to stay mildly funny as long as it remains relevant. Schumer poses topless from behind for the cover, an attention-grabbing strategy to cash in on her facial recognition. The pose also relates to themes of body-positivity in Schumer’s stand-up and social media presence. Indeed, stand-ups’ experience with storytelling seems to be what makes their transition into written works (typically in the form of unstructured memoirs) so graceful.
Schumer’s website advertises that the book “will feature personal and observational stories from Schumer that range from the raunchy to the romantic, the heartfelt to the harrowing.” The format of her memoir may follow the paths so many other comedians have tread, including Mindy Kaling (“Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?”), Amy Poehler (“Yes Please”) and most notably Sarah Silverman’s bold “Confessions of a Bedwetter.” Schumer’s collection will be available through bookstores starting August 16th, but is available for preorder through Barnes & Nobles as well as Amazon. The audio book will also be available as read by Schumer.
