Benedict Benjamin has been here before.
After all, the songwriter played a key role in The Mariner’s Children and Peggy Sue, lending an air of experience to his current solo work.
New album 'Night Songs' is aptly named - written at night, it was sparked by periods of insomnia. "I’d finish work around one to three am most of the time and walk home through the broken glass on the pavement. There’s a lot of duality about that time. It’s ominous and lonely but it’s cinematic and kind of magical too. I wanted to channel that into a set of songs".
Sessions span a 12 month period, a lengthy time by Benjamin's standards. But it was worth the wait, with 'Night Songs' boasting some of his most intriguing work to date.
'Had What You Had' is an engrossing example, full of lyrical word play and warm musicianship.
