Hercules, the demigod strongman of mythology, was known for his amorous adventures—including more than a few with other men.
The character has been a stalwart of Marvel Comics since the 1970s—and even a member of the Avengers—and several authors have at least hinted at his being bisexual.
But Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso says in the new ongoing Hercules series, debuting in November, Herc is 100% straight.
Asked about whether Hercules’ romantic relationship with Wolverine, spotlighted in 2013’s dimension-hopping X-Treme X-Men, was still canon, Alonso told Comic Book Resources said no.
“Hercules and James Howlett’s relationship in X-Treme X-Men took place in a unique alternate universe, similar to how Colossus was gay in the Ultimate Universe, but is straight in the [main Marvel Universe]. Same goes for Hercules here.”
Herc’s pansexuality was also alluded to in 2010’s Hercules: Fall of an Avenger #1, when a number of super heroines—and the gay mutant hero Northstar—discuss past affairs with the mighty Olympian.
Both Fall of an Avenger and X-Treme X-Men were written by Greg Pak.
And of course, in Greco-Roman mythology, Hercules’ male lovers were numerous—and included his sidekick Iolaus, played by Michael Hurst in the 1990s Kevin Sorbo TV show, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Dean O’Gorman in the Ryan Gosling series Young Hercules.
Marvel’s new Hercules series, written by Dan Abnett and drawn by Luke Ross, hits shelves in November.
