Controversial South African group Die Antwoord have launched a homophobic attack on Drake after both acts appeared at Australia’s Future Music Festival.
The incident occurred on the Instagram page belonging to Yolandi Visser, Die Antwoord’s female member. Apparently after seeing Drake’s show, which she referred to as “kak” (slang for excrement), Visserposted a photo of the rapper with the phrase, “Drake is a massive f—-t.”
There is no indication of what prompted the outburst, although Billboard points out that the members of Die Antwoord made a point back in 2011 of explaining why they feel entitled in using the homophobic slur due to the band’s DJ, Hi-Tek, is gay.
“I’d like to set the record straight here once and for all. Number one: DJ Hi-Tek is gay. So there you go. Now you all know,” explained Die Antwoord’s Watkin Tudor Jones to Huffington Post. “Number two: Dj Hi-Tek says the word f—-t doesn’t hold any power over him. Hi-Tek says f—-t all the time cause he’s like, kind of taken that word and made it his bitch. Number three: Just to be f—ing clear, the Antwoord is not homophobic… Number four: It comes across to us that some people from America are heavy sensitive about the use of certain words. But the thing is, what you need to understand is, we’re not from America. We’re from South Africa. And South Africa people aren’t so pumped up about these words.”
Drake has yet to respond to the outburst, but he’s likely too busy celebrating the fact that every single track from his surprise mixtape release, If You’re Reading This It’s Already Too Late, landed on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart simultaneously.
Die Antwoord members Watkin Tudor Jones and Yolandi Visser both have substantial roles in the upcoming science-fiction movie, Chappie, which opens on March 6.
