Skepta has finally released the music video for Energy (Stay Far Away), his mellow collaboration with WizKid. The audio for Energy has been floating around, as it has been available on streaming platforms and YouTube. Content wise, Skepta and Wizkid are a match made in heaven for this afrobeats flavoured song.
Energy is a melodic slow burner that is definitely suited to the clubs. WizKid supplies the hook and Skepta makes countless references to his Nigerian heritage throughout Energy. Skepta raps “Big chief Skeppy and I answer to no one” a reference to him being made a chief in his hometown in Nigeria in April this year. Skepta also raps “Give them the Shaku when I dance with the devil, Young Fela Kuti, the return of the rebel”, which is a nod to the popular Nigerian dance and legendary Nigerian artist Fela Kuti.
So it’s no surprise that the video was shot in Lagos, Nigeria. The video for Energy was directed by Meji Alabi and written by Grace Ladoja. The video is a visual tapestry of the rich Lagos scenery, as it shows the idyllic beaches and hedonistic club scene. The video helps to bring the song alive and reinforces the carefree nature of the song.
