OWEN DAVIES "Mystic" release

*THE SYNDICATE DOES NOT EXIST*

Owen Davies"Mystic" (video)
Forward-thinking folk singer Owen Davies is set to unveil his debut albumMystic this weekend, but before it officially arrives, Exclaim! has got the video premiere of the album's title track.

A storyteller at heart, Davies uses ambient guitars and confessional lyrics to make sure his tales are told. Extending himself beyond the boundaries of traditional folk music, Davies experiments with electronic percussion and synthetic sound throughout the new songs — tactics showcased on "Mystic."

The accompanying visuals find Davies sporting the Canadian outdoorsman uniform of flannel and a touque, as he navigates the wilderness, though the stakes are raised by the impending presence of a grim reaper-esque villain. Things take a disturbingly bloody, cannibalistic turn by the end of the clip, which was directed by Pony Girl member Pascal Huot.

"It was like 80% improvised," Huot explained in a statement about the video. "We knew we wanted Owen to eat himself. So we went to Westport where Owen grew up, to the quarry there — and another scene was shot in my Ottawa backyard."

"I wanted the hooded figure to make it into every shot without you necessarily noticing him," he continued. "He's there from the start and you'll see him if you're looking for him."

Keep an eye out and watch your back as you check out the clip for "Mystic" in the player below. Mystic is out on August 1 via So Sorry Records
