Jorja Smith has released the visual for her song “On Your Own”, directed by Rashid Babiker. Walsall singer Jorja Smith has had a massive year in the music, both here in the U.K. and across the globe. After much anticipation, the songstress dropped her debut album this year to both critical and commercial success. She is arguably the biggest R&B/Soul singer to emerge from the U.K. in recent times, arguably since the late icon Amy Winehouse. At the age of only 21, the artist has already achieved so much.
The new visual is highly creative. It starts with a young woman listening to the song “Lifeboats” off of Smith’s album “Lost and Found”. The woman then finds a book with the singer’s face on it, and the song for the visual “On Your Own” starts playing. The visual features gorgeous jewellery from Tiffany&Co.
In one shot Smith is wearing a white shirt, has her hair scraped back and has an image of a coin with her name and face on it, enabling her to be depicted as what she is; a Queen regardless of having a man in her life. The visual then depicts the songstress lying down, and then a woman in her underwear reading a book with her hair in a towel; a woman who is “all alone tonight”. This image is then spun upside down, suggesting that the woman is secure in her situation regardless of her being alone. This enhances the empowering message of the song; leaving someone who is not treating you right will render you relaxed, at peace and secure. The singer chews bubble gum and it goes all over her face, highlighting how care free she has left the guy who has been treating her badly.
Be sure to check out the powerful visual!
